Why the requirement exists
A resident is a working doctor. You consent patients, document in the medical record, present on ward rounds, take telephone handovers and sit examinations set by the Romanian Ministry of Health. All of that happens in Romanian, in Romanian public hospitals, with Romanian patients.
The requirement is therefore a patient-safety rule before it is an academic one. Universities cannot waive it, and neither can a pathway programme.
What level you actually need
The benchmark is B2 — independent user. In practice, B2 means you can follow a clinical discussion at natural speed, explain a diagnosis and treatment plan to a patient without rehearsing it, and write a clear discharge summary.
Evidence is provided either through a recognised language certificate or through completion of an accredited Romanian preparatory course, with a certification examination at the end.
A realistic timeline from zero
Romanian is a Romance language with Latin roots, which helps anyone with French, Spanish, Italian or Portuguese, and it rewards doctors because so much clinical vocabulary is Latin-derived. Even so, B2 is a real milestone.
- Months 1–3: A1–A2. Pronunciation, grammar foundations, everyday vocabulary. Roughly 8–10 hours a week.
- Months 4–7: B1. Conversation, past and conditional tenses, first medical vocabulary sets.
- Months 8–12: B2 and clinical Romanian. History-taking scripts, ward-round language, documentation, examination preparation.
- Throughout: passive exposure — Romanian news, medical podcasts, and conversation practice with native speakers.
Where the pathway programme fits
Language preparation is built into the Thumbay pathway rather than left to the candidate. Modules run in the UAE alongside document preparation and evaluation, so the certificate is ready when it is needed rather than becoming the reason an intake is missed.
