Who can apply to UTIRPP?

Graduates holding an MBBS, MD, or equivalent primary medical qualification from a WHO-recognized medical school, recognized by the relevant regulatory authority. GMU College of Medicine graduates form the primary intake; the program applies a minimum cumulative GPA benchmark of 2.75/4.0 (or equivalent) at pre-selection.

I graduated more than two years ago. Am I still eligible?

The standard window is within two years of graduation. Applicants with a longer gap may be considered based on recent clinical experience — speak to a Pathway advisor with your CV before deciding not to apply.

Question 3

Do I need to have completed an internship or clinical rotation?

Accepted Answer

Clinical experience strengthens your file substantially, and your two recommendation letters must come from professors or coordinators of medical-profile modules you actually participated in — through an internship, volunteering, or a mobility program — relevant to your chosen specialty.

Can graduates of any nationality apply?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The route described here is the one that applies to international (non-EU/EEA) graduates. EU/EEA citizens follow a different admission route under Romanian law (the national residency examination); contact the Pathway office for guidance.

Question 5

Is there an entrance exam?

Accepted Answer

There is no Romanian national examination for international (non-EU) candidates on this route. Selection is file-based: UMFST's admission committee evaluates your academic grades, recommendation letters, CV, and interview together, as a whole. Before that, Thumbay runs its own pre-selection, including a Multiple Mini Interview.

How does specialty allocation work?

You state three specialty options, ranked in order of preference. After the committee ranks all candidates, allocation proceeds down the ranking. For this first cycle there is no pre-defined seat allocation per specialty — applications themselves will show where demand lies. If applications for a specialty exceed current clinical training capacity, you will be offered redistribution to a related specialty of your choice.

What documents do I need?

Online application, medical degree certificate, academic transcripts, CV (submitted in advance of the interview, including volunteering, internships, and mobility programs), a specialty-focused motivational essay, three ranked specialty choices, two specialty-relevant recommendation letters, passport copy, photograph, English language certificate, evidence of Romanian language proficiency or preparation plan, and — where applicable — professional registration and a Good Standing Certificate. What should my motivational essay cover?

There is no prescribed length. Answer two questions clearly and personally: why this specialty (what draws you to it, how the interest developed, how it fits your professional vision), and why you are suited for it (clinical exposure, academic achievements, research, technical and interpersonal skills). Your CV — submitted in Europass format — letters, and essay should tell one consistent story.

What is the interview like?

Thumbay's pre-selection uses a Multiple Mini Interview format — timed stations testing clinical reasoning, ethics, communication, and motivation. The UMFST interview is individual, in person or online, about 15 minutes, before a committee of two (maximum three) members. It is recorded on a written evaluation sheet archived with your file and ends in a favourable or unfavourable recommendation.

When are the application deadlines?

Applications are open now — UMFST is ready to receive and evaluate files immediately. The admission process for the first cohort is scheduled to be fully completed by 15 October 2026, so admitted candidates can start the first module of the Romanian language preparatory programme straight afterwards.

Question 11

What language is the residency conducted in?

Accepted Answer

Romanian. This is set by Romanian regulation for all residency training, because doctors must communicate with the patients they treat. There is no English-language residency route in Romania.

Question 12

I don't speak Romanian. Is that a dealbreaker?

Accepted Answer

No — it's a stage of the journey, and the program is built around it. Before enrollment you must hold a recognized Romanian certificate at B2 level (CEFR) or complete a Romanian language preparatory program at an accredited institution. UTIRPP's structured language preparation begins in the UAE, so you arrive in Romania already well on your way.

How long does it take to reach B2?

Accredited preparatory programs for residency typically run six months to one year. Starting during the pathway phase in the UAE shortens the runway considerably.

Are there exemptions?

Accepted Answer

Yes — candidates who completed at least three consecutive years of study at an accredited Romanian higher-education institution are exempt from the certificate requirement.

Why do I also need an English certificate?

Accepted Answer

The pathway's own academic modules, simulation training, and interviews are conducted in English. But be clear-eyed: English is for the pathway phase; Romanian is for the residency.

How much does it cost?

The tuition fee for the international residency route is €13,000 per year. The route is fully self-funded; the payment schedule, Thumbay program fee, and what it covers are confirmed in writing at offer stage.

Do residents earn a salary on this route?

No. This international route does not provide a salary, stipend, scholarship, or other financial support during residency.

What does the Thumbay program fee cover?

Accepted Answer

Counseling and eligibility assessment, application and document management, the Romanian language program, recognition and Acceptance Letter facilitation, visa support, relocation assistance, and continuous student support through your residency. The itemized schedule is provided at offer stage.

A Romanian long-stay (D-type) visa appropriate to your enrollment, followed by a residence permit after arrival. The Pathway office manages the documentation with you; police clearance certificates should be obtained shortly before the visa application, as validity windows are short.

Romanian immigration law provides for family reunification once you hold a valid residence permit. The Pathway office can advise on timing and requirements for your situation.

How long is residency?

Where does the training happen?

Across the major clinical institutions of Târgu Mureș: the Emergency Clinical County Hospital (SCJU), the Mureș Clinical County Hospital, the Emergency Institute for Cardiovascular Diseases and Transplantation (IUBCvT), the Institute of Legal Medicine, and the university clinical departments of UMFST. What qualification do I receive?

On completing training you sit the national specialist examination (examenul de medic specialist), organised by the Romanian Ministry of Health; the specialist title is awarded by order of the Minister of Health. Registration and the licence to practise as a specialist are administered by the Romanian College of Physicians.

Will my specialist qualification be recognized in other countries?

European postgraduate specialist training substantially enhances international career mobility — and recognition in any specific country remains subject to that country's own requirements. We will tell you honestly what is and isn't automatic; no program can promise universal recognition, and you should be wary of any that does.

Can I do research during residency?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Residents have access to the Centre for Advanced Medical and Pharmaceutical Research (CCAMF) and its specialised laboratories, join departmental studies, clinical registries, and nationally funded (UEFISCDI) projects, and present at the Marisiensis International Congress, national society congresses, and European specialty congresses. Romanian law also allows residents to enrol in the UMFST doctoral school and complete a PhD alongside specialty training.

Can I switch specialties after allocation?

Allocation follows the committee ranking and your three stated choices; changes afterward are exceptional and governed by UMFST and Romanian regulations. Choose your three options carefully with your advisor.

What happens if I don't complete the language requirement in time?

You cannot enroll in residency without meeting it — which is exactly why the program starts your preparation in the UAE and tracks your progress against the calendar. Advisors will flag risk early and adjust your plan.

What are the completion requirements of the pathway itself?

Completion of all academic modules, clinical competency requirements, simulation training, satisfactory professionalism, the research and scholarly activity component, partner residency eligibility requirements, and Romanian licensing and institutional requirements before entering residency.
